Navigating Success: ESTE Celebrates Professional Women on Women’s Day
As we reflect on celebrating International Women's Day, a moment that resonates with the celebration of women's achievements, it's fitting to reflect on the progress made by women in the professional arena. Drawing inspiration from the valuable insights shared in the recent report, Women in the Workplace 2021, let's explore the journey of women who continue to shape and redefine success.
Understanding the Landscape:
Women in the Workplace 2021 (Report) provides a timely snapshot of gender dynamics in professional spheres, allowing us to appreciate the progress made and the challenges that persist. Despite improvements in women's representation across the corporate pipeline by the end of 2020, persistent challenges are highlighted in the report. Promotions at the first step up to manager are not equitable, creating a "broken rung" that hinders sustained progress at senior levels. Women of color face a significant drop in representation at every level, with only 4 percent reaching C-suite leadership. Despite important gains, women are still underrepresented.
Advancements in Leadership:
The insights from the Report align with the broader narrative of increased representation of women in leadership roles. Professional women are at the helm, contributing unique perspectives, and championing workplace cultures that foster collaboration and innovation. In other words, women are setting a new standard for leadership. For example, organizations now emphasize promoting employee well-being and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Women leaders, especially managers, have taken on additional responsibilities, supporting their teams, and dedicating more time to DEI efforts. Companies prioritizing employee well-being and DEI positively affect employee satisfaction and retention. However, the Report highlights the need for formal recognition and rewards for individuals contributing to these areas, as undervaluing such efforts has implications for women and overall organizational progress.
While women managers are taking significant steps to champion DEI efforts, they’re also outpacing their male counterparts in supporting their teams. Compared to men in similar roles, women managers consistently prioritize employee well-being. They actively check on team members, assist with workload management, and offer support to those facing burnout or navigating challenges related to work-life balance.
Flexibility and Work-Life Balance:
The Report acknowledges the significance of flexibility in work arrangements, resonating with professional women who navigate the intricate balance between work and life. Initiatives promoting flexibility, remote work options, and supportive workplace cultures are gaining prominence. However, the Report notes that women who are "Onlys," often the lone individual of their race or gender at work, experience heightened challenges in their day-to-day experiences. This unique status leads to increased scrutiny, with successes and failures closely examined, and a greater likelihood of encountering comments and behaviors that make them feel judged or excluded. For women of color, who may be "Double Onlys" — the only woman and the only person of their race — the compounded bias and pressure to perform further amplify the difficulty of achieving work-life balance. Striving for work-life balance is particularly challenging for "Double Onlys," as they face additional obstacles and are more likely to experience burnout in environments where their successes are magnified, and support may be harder to access.
Inspiring Future Generations:
The Report's central theme revolves around professional women as inspirational figures. Their commitment to mentorship, leadership development, and community engagement inspires future generations of women to envision and achieve success on their own terms.
As we reflect on the achievements of professional women since International Women's Day, let's celebrate their resilience, talent, and determination. The progress made and the challenges highlighted underscore the importance of continued advocacy for gender equality in the workplace. Together, let's honor the trailblazers shaping professional landscapes and influencing the future.
What You Can Do:
Recognize and support the women in your professional network. Take a moment to acknowledge their achievements and contributions. Consider implementing or promoting initiatives in your workplace that prioritize employee well-being, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Advocate for formal recognition and rewards for individuals who contribute to these essential areas. Together, through collective efforts and individual actions, we can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable professional landscape for women.
