ESTE Celebrates Women Veterans Day: A Journey of Progress and Esteem
Women Veterans Day, celebrated on June 12, is a day dedicated to honoring the contributions and sacrifices of women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Established in 2018, this day marks the 70th anniversary of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, which allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the military. As we reflect on the history and progress of women in the military, we also explore how their journey aligns with the ESTE framework—Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, and Engineering—demonstrating their diverse roles and impact.
The Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 was a landmark legislation that permanently enabled women to serve in the military, beyond wartime necessity. Before this, women had to serve in separate auxiliary units and were often relegated to non-combat roles. The Act not only integrated women into the military but also paved the way for future generations to break barriers and achieve remarkable milestones.
Women Veterans Day was first observed in Texas in 2018, following a successful advocacy campaign led by women veterans and their supporters. The day was chosen to coincide with the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, symbolizing a significant turning point in military history. Since then, various states have recognized Women Veterans Day, celebrating the achievements and acknowledging the challenges faced by women veterans.
Since the establishment of Women Veterans Day, there have been significant strides in recognizing and addressing the unique needs of women veterans. Increased visibility and advocacy have led to better healthcare services, support systems, and career opportunities tailored to women veterans. Organizations and initiatives dedicated to women veterans have flourished, providing essential resources and creating a strong community of support.
One notable area of progress is in healthcare. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has enhanced its services to cater to women veterans, focusing on comprehensive care that addresses physical, mental, and reproductive health needs. Additionally, there has been a growing emphasis on mental health support, acknowledging the unique challenges that women veterans may face, such as military sexual trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The ESTE framework—Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, and Engineering—beautifully encapsulates the multifaceted contributions of women veterans. Each pillar of ESTE reflects a mode of creative thinking and problem-solving that women veterans embody.
